Spotlight on Organization
Weekly, Twali will begin to profile an organization within our Netwerk committed to the proactive growth of the industry through consistent political and analytical activism. This week, we present:
The Blockchain Association
Industry Trade Association - Washington, DC
Aiming to serve as “the unified voice of the blockchain and cryptocurrency industry,” the Blockchain Association (BA) was founded in 2018. Early donations from Kraken, Digital Currency Group, and the Filecoin Foundation helped fuel the group’s rise. Today, BA represents over 60 members and engages in public policy analysis, professional development and advocacy.
Generally, they’re focused on:
Lobbying on public policy issues (mainly U.S. federal and state governments)
Hosting educational events and industry networking opportunities
Promoting careers blockchain industry
In practice, this looks like:
Series of events in Washington, DC to teach Capitol Hill staffers about key blockchain topics (past events have focused NFTs and central bank digital currencies, for example)
Writing comments, letters, and other testimony to inform Congressional and federal agencies on crypto policy topics (see recent testimony for example)
Advocating against the Proof-of-Work moratorium in the state of New York
Hosting and promotion of opportunities on the BA industry job board
They’ve already been responsible for:
Growing the BA membership list and substantially increasing organizational funding
Leading the crypto industry’s public response to allegations of the Russian government using crypto to evade sanctions
(see articles and Tweets from BA Head of Policy, Jake Chervinsky)
Organizing in-person and virtual events that raise awareness of blockchain/crypto among key policymakers
To them, good crypto regulation looks like:
Bipartisan
Help maintain a leading role for the United States in the global blockchain industry
Based on a sound understanding of blockchain technology and principles of decentralized/permissionless
Their industry partners outside of crypto are:
BA maintains links with several trade associations representing other segments of the information and communication technology industry
Their $$ goes to:
Federal Government Advocacy - primarily staff and resources dedicated to engaging with policy makers in Congress, the White House, and key agencies (e.g., Commodity Futures Trading Commission and Securities and Exchange Commission)
State advocacy - BA recently opened a new office in Albany, New York to spearhead policy engagement in the state
Ecosystem sponsorships targeting other non-profits, industry partners, and campus blockchain organizations
